Santorini Sunset with Wine
If you start asking around about must-see things in Santorini, one of the top things people will tell you is that you HAVE to see the sunset in Oia. At least, this is what we heard! (Spoiler alert: this is also what we now tell everyone who asks.)
On our second day in Greece, as you can read about in our Gettin' Greece post here, we went to Oia. Unfortunately for us, this isn't the day we watched the sunset. However, we did watch it from Fira. Although more towards the middle of the island, we still had an absolutely spectacular view of the sun falling into the ocean.
Just before sunset we propped ourselves up at one of the many outdoor restaurants overlooking the beautiful caldera of buildings and the spectacular oceanic view. We ordered two glasses of white wine (they really push the white wine here - it's local, and delicious), a delicious dinner and waited for the sun to set.
And sure enough, it did. The sun fell into the glass-like waters off of Fira and the sky lit into saturated shades of red and orange I had never quite seen before. Although we didn't watch from the prime viewing spot, our view was perfect.
Now, the hype of the Oia sunset makes perfect sense to me and this is one sight-to-see I will push on any Greece-goers. If you can't make it to Oia, just head towards the caldera and wait - you're sure to get a stunning view from wherever you are.
Especially with a tall glass of wine!
