Traditional Newfoundland Modernized
We instantly fell in love with this AirBnB located within walking distance of downtown St.John's. From the outside, the house looks like a traditional Newfoundland house with the bright yellow colour and green trim; however, when we stepped inside its doors, we were so surprised by the open concept and clean white design.
The traditional modern design in this house is gorgeous. Throughout the house they've kept a neutral feel, with white and grey on the walls and ceilings. This palette brings more light in to each space making it feel bright and clean. Similar to the look we've created at Mayflower Cottage, they made this white look feel cozy with the shiplap they've used on the walls and ceilings.
The kitchen is clearly the star of this two-story home! We love that it's open concept to the main floor with the large island and table in the center. What a great place to entertain and cook a meal for your friends. The finishes in this kitchen are classic, but with a modern twist. The backsplash is a great example of this - since it's a natural marble it will probably never go out of style but, we love how they went with a honeycomb shape instead of a simple subway!
Although most of the house is white, they kept a lot of natural wood throughout the house. The stair rails, the butcher block island, and the floors in the house add warmth to the white look. Another element that we love is that they've incorporated a lot of traditional local items like the stained glass window in the stairwell and the wool spinner. This all is in perfect contrast to the look of both the bathrooms in the house, which they've chosen to do a more modern design.
Needless to say, if you're looking for a place to stay in St.John's, or even just looking for a cozy weekend getaway, this house is perfect.
